The Effects of Infrasound
All of us have had feelings of dread, sadness and sickness. It’s part of the human experience. However sometimes those feelings happen for what seems like no reason. Some scientists believe that infrasound can be a cause for feelings of paranormal activity.
We decided to experiment a little with some samples of infrasound to attempt to experience some of the effects.
Using a common free sound utility called “Audacity” we recreated some low frequency sound by using a tone generator. The average human ear can detect from 20Hz to 20000Hz (Cycles Per Second). Within that range we hear anything from the base thumping of dance music all the way up to hearing the chirp of a bird or high pitched whine of a jet engine. But some animals such as elephants and whales acutally use infrasound to communicate. From about 1Hz to 20Hz the sound can carry greater distances.
Sound can be a beautiful thing, but can also be to our detriment. Most larger cities and towns suffer from noise pollution on such a great scale that many believe it could be worse for our health than the pollution from the vehicles we drive. So how does one experience the darker effects of sound. Well it was really quite easy.
Using Audacity we generated various tones based between 1Hz and 20Hz at different volumes. With a pair of insulated headphones to isolate the sound more effectively we began to subject ourselves to variations of the tones. We started with SINE wave which is a nice smooth sound curve. After pounding our heads with this tone for a while, we really didn’t notice much difference in our moods or feelings. So we began to test using a square wave, then a sawtooth form. The square wave started to give us the feeling of stomach upset and sickness. However it wasn’t until we tried the sawtooth wave that we really noticed the effects of infrasound. The sawtooth wave in form is a sharp up and down movement. Basically like a bunch of little spikes. So again we subjected ourselves to the sawtooth at various frequencies.
Then it began, the feeling of sickness and uncomfortable feelings. Trust me there is nothing joyful about listening to this stuff. It was quickly apparent that the effects of infrasound on the human body could potentially cause some serious side effects. So the question is, could this beone of the possible reasons for getting that “spooky” feeling?
We now have a first hand understanding to take with us in the field that will allow us to attempt to disqualify some reports of sickness or even a the feelings of a presence in a room. We know that some machines emit these infrasounds without us ever knowing it. Something to keep in mind if you ever get those “unexplainable” feelings in specific areas of a building. You never know; what might be making you sick could be simple as an air conditioner or freezer.

I believe I am being “zapped” by infrasound. I live in a terrace house that I rent and whenever I am in the house (I travel interstate often) I feel nauseous, but my partner has far more pronounced symptoms, she gets headaches, backaches, tics, even chattering teeth, ringing (and sometimes screaming) in the ears, shortness of breath, wobbly voice, muscle contractions, heart palpitations – need I go on. The scarry thing is I know the landlord, which is the state (NSW Australia) government wants us out but the lease is still running. It sounds crazy but these symptoms stop and start, i.e. they’re not continuous it’s as if someone is simply turning them on and off and generally at the same time each day. So if anyone knows of any infrasound generating equipment that a developer of even government might be able to use to get rid of unwanted tenants could you please let me know.
